Overview
Bogotá holds 188 recorded bird species within the city limits — four of them endemic — and the Monserrate Birdwatching Tour gives you direct access to the best of them: a private, capped-entry trail at 3,152 meters, guided by an expert who reads calls and behavior as fluently as most people read text. Colombia holds more bird species than any other country on earth, and most travelers who come for the cities and colonial history never find out.
The Sendero Paramuno is purpose-built for birders, access-capped to protect the habitat, and located behind a private gate at the summit while the main trail fills with pilgrims and city-view seekers. Hummingbirds are the headline — including the Sword-billed, the only bird in the world with a bill longer than its body — but the full story includes mountain tanagers, Andean guans, mixed canopy flocks, and a rare hybrid hummingbird with coloration found nowhere else on earth. A private guide turns a trail with feeders into a lesson in Andean ecology, altitudinal migration, and the centuries of natural history that predate the city below.
Itinerary
Highlights
Walk an exclusive, capped-entry birding trail at Monserrate's summit — quiet by design, with no crowds and more than 100 recorded species.
Spot hummingbirds at close range — the trail's feeders attract Sword-billed, Copper-bellied Puffleg, Blue-throated Starfrontlet, and Great Sapphirewing, among others.
Learn to identify Colombia's Andean birds from an expert guide who reads behavior, call, and plumage rather than just pointing at feeders.
Watch for the Scarlet-bellied Mountain Tanager, Andean Guan, and mixed flocks of flycatchers and flowerpiercers moving through the high forest canopy.
Start the morning above the city at 3,152 meters, where Bogotá spreads below and the forest holds birds you won't find at lower altitudes.

Know before you book
This tour starts early in the morning — birds are most active at dawn and the first hours of daylight. Your pickup time will be confirmed by your guide the day before.
Monserrate's birding trail sits at 3,152 meters above sea level. Take it slow, drink water before you go, and let your guide know if you feel any altitude discomfort during the tour.
Dress in layers. The summit is shaded in the early morning and can be cold even on a clear day — temperatures at the top are significantly lower than in the city below. A warm jacket and a light rain layer are both recommended.
Comfortable walking shoes are sufficient. The trail is short and mostly flat — you do not need hiking boots, but avoid sandals or flat dress shoes.
Binoculars are available to borrow on request — confirm when booking. If you own a pair, bring them. A camera with a zoom lens is excellent for this trail.
The trail has a strict daily visitor cap to protect the habitat and keep the experience quiet. Your spot is confirmed when you book — late bookings may not be available.

FAQs
Wear comfortable clothes suitable for hiking — avoid bright colors, which can disturb the birds. Waterproof hiking footwear is recommended, and bring a warm jacket. Monserrate sits above 3,000 meters and the morning temperature at the summit is significantly colder than in the city below. If you use a walking cane, bring it.
Yes. Your guide will move at your pace throughout the tour, without rushing. Keep in mind the activity takes place at considerable altitude — if you have any health conditions your guide should know about, note them at booking or let them know when you're picked up. The trail is accessible and the pace is relaxed.
Birdwatching is an early-morning activity because that's when most species are feeding, calling, and most active. By midday the forest goes quieter. Starting at first light gives you the best chance of seeing the widest range of species — including the hummingbirds that are most visible in the first hours after dawn.
Monserrate carries several local legends. Some say the sculpture of the fallen Lord inside the Sanctuary slowly grows hair. Others say that couples who visit the Sanctuary together never end up getting married. And some believe there is a point between Bogotá and Monserrate where the sun rises and marks the path to El Dorado — the legendary golden city that sent Spanish explorers across an entire continent.
